It is difficult to trace the exact origin of astral projection. Seemingly, the concept spans the globe in many cultures throughout many centuries. Some of the earliest Chinese Taoist alchemical practices as well as early Hindu scriptures in India tell of similar ideas, as well as ancient Egyptian teachings. Ancient Egypt though regarded the ability to astral project as only available to those of power. It may be safe to say that the origin of astral projection came about at the time the human brain was capable of utilizing the power of self control to the point of separating the mind from the body. The ability to astral project, as we know it today, depends entirely upon relaxation and meditative techniques.

Of this century there have been many authors and sociological practitioners who have studied the subject. Robert Monroe’s published works, 1971-1994 could probably be most credited for popularizing the term “OBE” in our day and age. His books went on to be translated into many different languages and are considered to be an in-depth look into the phenomenon of astral projection. Monroe also founded an institute dedicated to the exploration of auditory technology to assist others in achieving projection as well as other altered states of consciousness.

In 1929 a book was published by a psychical researcher named, Hereward Carrington and Sylvan Mundoon who professed personal ease with astral projection titled, The Projection of the Astral Body. Within the pages they told of techniques which facilitated a projection into the astral plane. Visualizing mental images such as flying or traveling upward in an elevator just before going to sleep were among the techniques they wrote of. Also, trying to regain walking consciousness while in a lucid dreaming state was discussed.

In a personal and spiritual diary, dated as early as 1747, Emmanuel Swedenborg could more then likely be one of the first practitioners known to write extensively about OBE.

Overall, the ability to astral project one’s spirit self into the world of the astral plane has long been studied and discussed. There are many benefits associated with the practice which attract the curiosity of many people throughout the world. The astral environment is divided into levels or planes which are also diversely different throughout cultures and opinions, therefore it is difficult to pinpoint an exact method or teaching. It may be safe to say that astral projection is best left to the individual to research and formulate their own opinion of the beneficial results one can achieve through metaphysical practices such as astral projection.
